When I walked in Macey and Paul’s house for their lifestyle newborn session, their almost three-year-old immediately greeted me and wanted to talk to me. I had never met this family before, so the absolute sweetness of this moment was not lost on me. Very excitedly and very emphatically, he told me about his upcoming third birthday. At one point he grabbed my hand, and his little fingers held mine as he whispered in my ear, “volcanoes.”
Toddlers bring so much fun and so much energy to a newborn shoot. As I photographed some sweet moments between big brother and his new baby sister, we continued to talk about his birthday, volcanoes, and how his dad was going to dress up like a dinosaur! There can be big feelings when a new sibling arrives, so I like to get on their level and talk with them about whatever they’re interested in, so they feel included and important.
Involving toddlers in an activity during the photo session helps them stay engaged and allows for some beautiful, authentic moments to occur. As big brother listened attentively while Mom read him, Guess How Much I love you, and his bare feet dangled down, I melted. These real moments between the family are the moments I love documenting best.
Macey chose a dress from my client closet, and the delicate pink flowers on it complimented baby girl’s pink nursery perfectly. Paige, my MUA, came early that morning to their home to do Macey’s makeup and treat her to a little pampering. Taking care of wardrobe and makeup for my sleep-deprived moms is an important part of the stress-free experience I give to my clients.
