Choosing a dress for your newborn or family photo session can seem like a stressful, time-consuming, and daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! Being in this business for several years AND being a mom, I’ve learned a ton about what dresses work best for photos. Here are three things I look for when choosing a dress:
1. Length. When you choose a longer length, you don’t have to worry about your dress when you’re walking, or if the wind blows, or when you’re sitting. Less fussing with your dress = a more enjoyable experience!
2. Fit and material. A tailored fit (a dress or skirt that is lined or a thicker material) and a dress that comes in at the waist tends to be very flattering. The right material not only makes you look better, but it creates added movement and interest giving your photos that elevated, styled, and polished look.
3. Color. I LOVE soft, neutral colors. Know why? Because it makes the focus of the photos on YOU and the love and bond your family has and not the colors of clothes you’re wearing. It also avoids any strange color casts – when the light bounces off your clothes and onto your skin or hair. Think bright red or pink or neon bouncing back onto your face or neck -yikes.
Want to make it SUPER easy to choose a dress for your next session? Borrow one from my Client Closet!🎉🎉🎉 I have taken a course that included training on how to choose dresses that have a flattering cut, style, length, and color, so I’m not just guessing here! I love helping my clients take the stress out of planning and coordinating outfits. And chances are if you love the way you look in the photos, you’re going to love the photos even more.
